Advantages of Drive In Pallet Racking

Drive-in pallet racking systems offer cost-effective, high-density storage. Drive-in  racking systems have specific design criteria that must be taken into consideration before deciding whether this system is the best one for your warehouse storage.

What Is a Drive-In Pallet Racking?

Drive-in and drive-thru racks are used with forklifts and pallet jacks. Both systems let lift trucks enter from either side to access pallets. The loads are supported by rails that are attached to upright frames. Lift trucks can be driven through the uprights to access the pallets.

Drive-in racking offers tight storage of boxes, ample aisle area, and allows the forklift to enter the aisle from one side. Often, boxes are stacked against a wall, and inventory is taken from one end. Drive-in racks use the LIFO method for picking inventory – last in, first out. Similarly, drive-thru racking provides good storage capacity but allows access from both ends. It uses the FIFO method of retrieval – first in, first out. Drive-thru racks are ideal for dated or time-sensitive products. Both drive-in and drive-thru racks make efficient use of storage space.

Advantages of Drive-In Pallet Racking

Requiring fewer aisles and providing better cube utilisation than selective racks, a drive-in rack gives you more storage density than selective racking. Advantages of drive in / drive thru pallet racking systems include:

  • Clearance for lift trucks that allow you to drive into the racking system
  • Multiple configurations options, including LIFO/FIFO (last in, first out/first in, first out)
  • Reduction in warehouse space required, lower costs, and holds more loads due to increased storage density
  • High volume, low SKU for storing large amounts of similar products
  • Better control over entry and exit
  • Increased density as opposed to the selectivity of a selective pallet rack system
  • A wide variety of heights and depths to meet any storage requirement

When Do You Need Drive-In Pallet Racking?

Drive in Pallet Racking is best for stocking large quantities of relatively few product types. It provides a high-density storage solution for homogeneous, low-density rotation products stored on a large number of pallets. This pallet racking system reduces overall square footage requirements by 35 percent or more compared to a standard selective rack configuration. Highly customisable, this system can be adapted to either a first in, first out system or a last in, first out system.

Drive-In Pallet Racking Considerations

A Drive-in pallet racking design requires an in-depth understanding of the products to be stored and their lifecycle. This ensures that they will be routinely used in the right order to prevent expiry and obsolescence. In addition, drive-in pallet racking systems need a detailed knowledge of the load capability of the racks, forklifts, and other materials handling equipment.

Increase Your Warehouse Space

Drive-in high-density pallet storage systems are ideal for warehouses that carry large quantitates of fewer products. They are also good for items that are typically not time sensitive. They can maximise your storage space to store inventory anywhere from two to ten pallets deep. Drive-in  pallet storage systems reduce the amount of access aisles, which means you can increase your warehouse storage capacity.
