The advantages of using shelving systems in industrial units

As you have already paid for all the space in your warehouse, it seems sensible to use as much of it as possible – even if that means going upwards.
Strictly speaking, the definition of a mezzanine floor is an intermediate floor in a building which is partly open to the floor below – or which does not extend over the whole floor. However, the term is often loosely used to mean any floor which has been inserted into an original high-ceilinged building, as long as it does not take up more than one third of the floor space of the floor below.
Generally, a mezzanine floor is a temporary structure, meaning that it can be dismantled and relocated if required.
How you might use a Mezzanine Floor
Basically, a mezzanine floor adds to your overall floorspace. They are used in a variety of ways:
- To increase storage space for stock
- To create more production workspace
- To add a rest place for staff
- For additional office space
- For a secure space for personal lockers etc
- A combination of all of the above
With Walls or Without
An office space built on a mezzanine flooring may well be designed with full stud walls and door. If heating is required, stud walls and ceiling may be advisable.
Essentially, the design can be as luxurious or as basic as your budget and potential use allows.
In addition, consideration should be given to the size of the space and whether you would want the whole space to be given over to just one use. Some of the space could be used for offices and some could be more open plan, creating the opportunity for people within certain areas to see the space below.
Partitioning walls which do not go all the way to the ceiling could help create different areas on the mezzanine floor, where appropriate.
Benefits of a Mezzanine Floor
The benefits and uses of a mezzanine floor are numerous but here are a few which might encourage you to take this particular option of creating more warehouse space seriously:
- No need to change stationery and website to let customers know of a new address
- Make the most of the space you are already paying for
- Can be dismantled and relocated if your needs change
- Can be as utilitarian or as luxurious as you need it to be
- Cost effective
- Often planning permission is not necessary
